Nigeria’s corruption difficult to defeat – US justice official

The battle against corruption in Nigeria will not be easily defeated because it has become endemic, the Head Public Integrity Section in the United States Department of Justice Mr Peter Hensworth has said.

Mr Hensworth stated this yesterday at the opening of a conference on anti-corruption partnership between the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), FCT chapter and the United States embassy in Abuja.

While sharing the experience of the United States in the Watergate Scandal which forced the resignation of then President Richard Nixon in 1974, he said the war against corruption must be waged consistently irrespective of the prevailing outcomes. He gave a time frame of ten years for Nigeria to record some progress if it remains consistent.

In his presentation, Mr Leonard Ehimaka from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) blamed ‘frustrating’ laws for the little success achieved in the anti-corruption.

He said the provisions of section 308 of the 1999 constitution which bars state governors from criminal or civil prosecution has hindered their being made accountable for the management of funds appropriated to the local governments.

In her remarks, Justice O. O. Goodluck of the Abuja Multidoor Courthouse faulted the provision in Nigerian laws for interlocutory applications on cases from the court of first instance to appeals, including weak investigations and charges by the anti-corruption agencies as some of the impediments to speedy justice delivery and anti-corruption trials in the country.
