First of all, I must state that I am happy that the Super Eagles defeated Tahiti. It’s the three points we all expected from our first game, so it’s a good result.
But we could have scored loads more than the six we got against the team I believe the other teams will also beat. We were so superior to the Tahitians that 6-1 doesn’t sound like a big victory. It could have ended up being a cricket score. We should have scored at least 11 or 12. Yes, we had enough opportunities to get a dozen goals.
The danger in all the missed chances is that it could come back to haunt us. One of the lessons I learned in my years of top-level football is that when you have the ability to punish an opposing team, you punish them till the end. You score as many as you can because you never can tell, it might all come down to goals difference.
We’re not going to get teams like Tahiti all the time and we should have taken a lot more chances than we did. If I was Stephen Keshi I would be very angry with the players in the dressing room and let them know I wasn’t happy with their wasteful finishing.
We definitely have to improve for the next game against Uruguay because I’m sure they won’t be as easy as Tahiti.
However, I still feel the Eagles did not do too badly as a team. In spite of the missed chances, they still scored six goals, so we should not be too hard on them.
As a whole the Eagles did well and no particular player was terribly disappointing.
But Nnamdi Oduamadi stood out for me. He is my man of the match by a mile.
Apart from scoring a hat-trick, he was very impressive all around. His focus, skillful touches, passes and movement gave Tahiti problems all night and they could not deal with him.
He is so good some people are even comparing him to me. Inasmuch as I believe he is his own man, I concede that I see traces of myself in the young man. One or two of his goals are the kind of goals I liked scoring. Special goals that require great skill.
I remember I met him when he was in the U-23s and I saw he was going to be a fantastic player. I spoke with him and advised him to be focused and to take the game seriously in order to fulfill his full potential.
I’m happy he has improved from that time and if he continues his progress he will become an important player for the Super Eagles.
He could become key to the Eagles’ progress at this Confederations Cup. I wish him and the Eagles well.
