Nigeria’s first lady, Dame Patience Jonathan is not just popular in the country and beyond because of being the wife of Mr. President, but for the array of controversies she has been enmeshed in. Unlike her predecessors, the first lady has drawn more attention to the office of the first ladyship.

What no one can deny is the fact that she continues to reel from one controversy to another, many of which had brought her to the public scrutiny. Among the barrage of controversies, one that readily comes to mind is her appointment as a permanent secretary in Bayelsa State civil service. While the state government had made several attempts to explain and justify it, Nigerians have come to label the appointment as an abuse of processes, abuse of office and totally without merit. It is not surprising that the appointment has attracted public criticisms on grounds of propriety. But Mrs. Jonathan has already taken the oath of office, laying off claims that she might turn down the controversial appointment.
While many Nigerians may now come to terms with her controversial lifestyle which has been a major feast for the Nigerian media in recent times, Global News findings revealed that she is not new to the terrain at all. Going by her intimidating controversial record, her long journey to controversy started in 1999 when her husband was the Bayelsa State deputy governor. Back then, she was said to be at the centre of many political wars in the state. The fearless dame was said to have protected her husband when he was the governor of the state from the jaws of death. It was reported that some aggrieved militants had invaded Yenogoa, the state capital with the aim of kidnapping the governor over an alleged comment he made concerning the freedom fighter’s group, by calling them criminals. Another instance when her popularity soared was when she allegedly got involved in money laundering.  It will be recalled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested her aides for money laundering during her reign as Bayelsa first lady, but the matter was later swept under the carpet.
During the era of Dr. Jonathan as vice president, Dame was also in the news for the known reason. She was said to have fought the then first lady, Turai Yar’Adua in the course of fighting for her husband’s right before her recent celebrated fight with the latter.
Just of recent, the two got involved in a bitter war over a disputed Abuja land.  The matter is still in court and many wonder why the first lady who is supposed to be a lover of peace is always involved in messy controversy.
Those in the know will not also forget in a hurry the show of shame that happened some time ago during her courtesy visit to Bayelsa where the first lady detained a driver for obstructing her convoy. Several pleas made to her to forgive the alleged offender fell on deaf ears until the president later mediated into the matter.
Among those who have also suffered humiliation from the first lady’s controversial lifestyle is the Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi.  During the ugly scenario which raised lots of dust happened in her home town, Okrika, Bayelsa State, she was reported to have publicly snatched away a microphone from the governor during a discourse, in the bid of protecting her people over demolition of Port Harcourt Waterfront settlement. The molested governor was said to have covered his eyes in shame and headed straight to his car. Since then, the relationship between the two had suffered a setback.
It was also alleged that a certain event that happened in the state between the first lady and former governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva had caused the latter his governorship position. Pained over the event, she was alleged to have sworn on the grave of her forefathers that she would take her pound of flesh back. And during the governorship election, she ensured that her husband threw his weight behind the now governor who is allegedly paying back with the controversial appointment.
The first lady has also remained controversial through her educational background. Though there are claims that the first Lady obtained a National Certificate of Education (NCE) in Mathematics/Biology from the Rivers State College of Arts and Science, Port Harcourt and later proceeded to the University of Port Harcourt and studied Biology/Psychology, many people still wonder how a person with this educational background can make so many grammatical blunders in her speeches.
Be that as it may, besides her political exploits which have continued to generate lots of controversies, her business empire is also becoming the centre of attraction to some close watchers.
It is said that very soon, the first lady may emerge the unbeatable female hotelier in the country going by her business empire. Apart from her known Megals Resort Hotel in Otuokogbia, Bayelsa, she is said to be building a monstrous tourism hotel with international standard. The yet-to-be-completed hotel is located along Isaac Boro Expressway in Bayelsa. And work is said to be going on the site every day.
Though Mrs. Jonathan may appear controversial to many Nigerians, she has also demonstrated doggedness, passion, rigour and some exemplary leadership skills. She is also seen as a pillar of support to her husband, though amidst controversies.
