Rivers Speaker alleges plot to assassinate Amaechi, others

PORT HARCOURT— SPEAKER of Rivers State House of Assembly, Otelemaba Amachree, yesterday, said he had uncovered an alleged plot to assassinate Governor Chibuike Amaechi, some lawmakers and prominent government officials in the state.

Amachree, in an open letter to President Goodluck Jonathan, said that the alleged planned assassination was being hatched in a neighbouring state and Abuja.

According to him, part of the plot was to release 18 hoodlums currently in detention to carry out the assassinations.

He said: “The situation in Rivers State has reached a fever-pitch, as there are strong indications that the governor, Mr. Amaechi, some legislators and prominent government officials have been marked for assassination, following series of reported nocturnal meetings held in a neighbouring state and Abuja. The situation is exacerbated with the planned release, from detention, of 18 notable robbery and kidnap kingpins currently in custody, to carry out this planned mayhem on government officials, innocent citizens and residents of the state.

“Your Excellency sir, we are alarmed and disturbed by the planned withdrawal of security personnel attached to various Rivers State Government establishments and officials, especially that of Governor Amaechi, the Rivers State House of Assembly, the ministries and the local government areas.”

Urging President Jonathan to intervene in the political crisis rocking the state, the Speaker also accused the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Joseph Mbu, of being an interested party in the crisis, adding that he should be redeployed.

Meantime, the state Commissioner of Police, Mbu said the Speaker did not notify him of the alleged assassination plot.

Speaking through the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs. Angela Agabe, Mbu said it was also not true that the Police was planning to withdraw security protection from the governor and government establishments in the state.

“There is no plan to withdraw police protection from the governor or any government establishment or even any government personnel entitled to it,” he said.
