Wonder(ful) Women - Sue Brown, Mayim Bialik & an entire troop of little girls I know

Welcome to the Wonder(ful) Women series! This is my newest, and most fabulously kickass series yet, because I'm featuring real-life female superheroes every week. My hope is to bring awareness to stories in the news, and make the women I know in person realize how much they inspire me and everyone around them.

Off we go.

Sue Brown
If you're a Facebook junkie, it's fairly likely that you've seen the pictures of Sue's daughter Karrie floating around the interwebs in the past few days. Karrie is the 17 year old that became a Wet Seal model who happens to also have Down's Syndrome.

Karrie is a teen girl who loves their clothing, she just happens to be rocking an extra chromosome in addition to some adorable outfits.

It all started when she posted a picture of her daughter on Facebook for the first day of school. Within hours, she was being contacted by the mothers of children with Down's looking for stylish but comfortable clothing for their kids. Within a day, she had a Facebook page set up to get Wet Seal's attention, and she absolutely did. They flew Karrie and her mom out for a photo shoot.

When Sue was informed during her pregnancy that her child would have Down's, her mother let her cry for 20 minutes, then asked her how this made anything different.

Her answer? It didn't.

Her little girl would grow up to have hopes and dreams. Sue would never let her daughter's disability hold her back, and she proved just that.

Thank you.

Mayim Bialik
First of all, she was Blossom. So that makes her awesome to begin with.

She's also Amy Farrah Fowler on The Big Bang Theory, which happens to be one of my favorite shows. An awkward genius with a socially inept boyfriend, she is freaking hilarious. I mean, seriously, this was one of THE funniest scenes I have ever seen on television. Ever.

It's funny because I think there is a piece (maybe microscopic, maybe huge) of all us gals who want to believe that we're princesses. Even if we are nerds who wear sensible shoes.

Mayim isn't just an actress though. She has a PhD in neuroscience (yes, really). She is a writer, and has a book out about attachment parenting (which is rad). She's a social media mogul with her own website and blogs and more.

Oh, and she and Melissa Rauch (Bernadette) were the first of the cast members to negotiate pay raises this season on the show, which led to everyone else getting a raise. Neither of them was an original cast member.

Mayim, keep doing your nerd girl thing. We love you for it.

The Entire Troop of Little Girls I Know
My oldest daughter, Freckles, has been in the same girl scout troop since Kindergarten. For the most part, the group of girls has remained the same for six years now.

As they have all gotten older and have more activities going on, their Troop has decided to dissolve. Some will go on to another Troop, others will move on to sports and dance and whatever else they have going on.

Over the years, they have had some amazing experiences, and have used their cookie fundraising money to fund some of the biggest ones.

They've spent the night at the Zoo, they've slept beneath the giant glass of the aquarium. Each year, a ridiculously awesome experience was their motivation to sell lots and lots of cookies.

They were planning to go out horseback riding this year as their last hurrah before the Troop dissolved, one last great experience.

Until now.

The girls unanimously decided to forgo the horses.

They want to give their money, all of it, to flood relief charities here locally.

All the moms were in shock as they went down the line, one by one, saying that they wanted to donate the money. They wanted to help people. They didn't need to ride horses. This was more important.

They are 10.

They are girl scouts. These girls will forever be girl scouts, even if their time is done with the organization, because they understand what it means.

The Girl Scout Promise
On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

The Girl Scout Law
I will do my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,

and to
respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout.

I'm so proud of them.
