Off we go.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg
She's one of the Supremes, and it seems like the longer she sticks around the bench, the feistier she gets. AND I LOVE IT. She's progressive, she can actually comprehend concepts like inequality and injustice, she understands that sometimes the laws actually change how people behave but not because the people would have otherwise, but because they weren't given any other option.
She's up against some of the most conservative justices that have sat on the court in a very long time, and she holds her own. She didn't always have such firmness to her opinions, but now she does, and watch out.
If she's on the losing side of the vote, she's taken to writing scathing dissents, and much of what she warned about in the VRA case dissent has already come to fruition. She's one smart lady.
She was the first woman on Columbia's Law Review. Before becoming a justice, she was an advocate for women's rights and co-founded the Women's Rights Project in the ACLU.
She's the oldest sitting justice on the court, leading to much speculation about when she might retire, but she hasn't given any indication that she's going anywhere anytime soon. I hope she stays a few more years.
Thank you, Justice Ginsburg, for so often being the voice of reason.
Michelle Knight
One of the captives in the Ariel Castro case, she was held for over eleven years. She was raped and tortured the entire time.
Castro pled guilty to the charges against him in exchange for taking the death penalty off the table. There was still a hearing for his sentencing this week, and this brave woman stood before the court and shared her experience. It was the first time since her escape that she had been in the same room with him. She even spoke directly at the man who'd taken her freedom and violated her repeatedly.
Of the three women who were held, Michelle was the one that the least number of people ever bothered to look for. It was decided that she had just left one day, angry over a custody dispute involving her young son. She was the oldest when she disappeared, and the authorities never searched for her the way they did the other two. Her mother held out hope the whole time though, never believing for one second that her daughter would just drop off the map intentionally.
Knight was the one who delivered and revived the child Amanda Berry had as a result of the rapes. She stepped in and took abuse meant for the other women at times. In the face of one of the most unimaginable experiences, she was a hero.
Michelle, your voice has finally been heard. Thank you.
Christine Vader
If you're a fan of mine on Facebook, you're likely one of hers too already. She's the voice behind Slice of Humble. If not, you should be. Go ahead and get over there. I'll wait.
She's one of the people that I have become a lot closer to in the last few months through this strangely awesome blogger universe. Though many parts of our personal stories are vastly different, there are more pieces of them that are alike than most people would ever realize.
We have both been through some real life shit. We both write about going through that shit. It's those experiences that build character, and she has more of it in her teeny tiny little feet than most people have in their entire bodies.
She's strong, she's brave, she's open, she's fiercely protective of her children. She's willing to put it all out there, she's willing to tell her stories, even when it's gut wrenchingly hard. She knows that exposing these things about her life isn't easy, and she knows she's going to draw criticism every time she does it, but she does it anyway. She knows that it's worth it because somewhere out there right now, someone else is going through the same thing or something very similar and just needs to know that someone understands.
She's that someone.
She's also funny as hell, wears her heart on her sleeve, tells it like it is with no filter and is quite possibly the most adorable blogger in the known universe. Also, I'm in love with her tattoos.
And she's humble. Truly humble. It's not just a catchy name, this alter ego of hers. She's the real deal.
Christine, this world is a better place because of your voice. I'm honored to call you a friend. Thank you for being you.
