All the ones we hold in our hearts...

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 04 Mei 2013 0 komentar
Tomorrow is International Bereaved Mother's Day, a day to remember why the Mother's Day that is traditionally celebrated came into existence.

I'm writing about it this week, along with many other talented bloggers. You can find them all here.

Many, many years ago, a childless woman named Anna Jarvis decided that she wanted to celebrate her own mother, Ann.  Over the course of her life, Ann lost seven children, yet persevered through it all and raised her surviving babies to adulthood. This website can tell you more about her story and about this day.

Though Anna is widely credited with the establishment of the holiday here in the United States, she came to resent the commercialization of it all, and the resulting societal exclusion of the very women she intended to include - those who had lost their children.

With that history, this new date was created.

In past years, I have written about how Mother's Day marginalizes all those women.  How they need to be remembered too.

We are reminded to buy flowers and jewelry, to make phone calls and send cards. Those of us with children now are urged to enjoy runny scrambled eggs and dandelions picked by tiny hands...and we do.

For too many of us, and for too many of our sisters without the children they should have, there is something missing though.

A mother's love comes from her heart.

It begins long before she even becomes pregnant for the first time.

It lasts forever, even if she says goodbye long before then.

It is her will to create life, to nourish it, to raise it up and let it go, that makes her a mother.

It is not her uterus, or how long it was occupied or if it ever was.

It is not her breasts, or how long they fed an infant or if they ever did.

It is not her arms, or whether they are full now or if they ever were.

It is her heart.

As a woman who has lost a child of my own, I know the void. I know something is missing, someone is missing. I know the pain. I wonder all the time what could have been. What should have been. I wonder what her eyes would have looked like, what color her hair would have been. I wonder what she would have loved, who she would have been. I wonder how she would have interacted with her siblings, then I wonder if they would be the same people they are if it wasn't for her absence.

I know that things would surely be different if her life had never been a part of mine. I know that I loved her even though we never met. I know that she changed me as a person, changed everything about my life, and that she changed it forever. I know that I'm not the same person that I was before her.

I know that losing her stole the joy for so many things in my life, joy that I would never get back. I know that I never again naively assumed that everything would be okay. I know that when I would find comfort that my following pregnancies were going as they should, the panic would always find it's way back into my heart again. I know that I worried because I knew how horribly wrong things could go. I know that in some ways I attached myself more to them our of fear, and that in others I distanced myself more out of that same fear.

As a woman who endured infertility, I know the pain that comes every single month. The mourning something that wasn't ever there except in your heart. I know the games you play in your mind, like maybe it was just a day too early to test, or if I just bought every brand one of them would tell me what I wanted to hear. I know how it feels to envy all the women in the world who are able to do this when I can't. I know how it seems like every woman in the world is pregnant or snuggling a newborn. I know that pain is real and genuine and valid. I know that there is no utility in comparing pain with that of anyone else. I know that sometimes all I need do is look into the eyes of another woman and I know that she understands. I know how crippling hope can be when hope isn't enough.

As a doula, I have helped women through losses. Some early, some late, some after babies were here and in their arms for a little while. I've sat in a hospital room with a mother and simultaneously celebrated the healthy life within her arms and mourned the one who was gone. I've held that mother's heart in my heart.

As a friend, I have seen women faced with horrible choices where there wasn't really one at all. Who want more than anything to have a child that they cannot. Who have put their bodies and their minds and their hearts through hell and still cannot. Who were tied up in pending adoptions, who had outfits selected, who had nurseries ready, only to have it all fall apart at the end, leaving a hopeful mother with empty arms again as the future she imagined slipped silently away.

As a writer, I have come to form amazing connections with women who've endured losses the rest of us could only imagine. Who've lost multiple pregnancies. Who've delivered stillborn babies in sterile hospital rooms. Who've held onto those babies for a day or a week or a year or five years, only to have them taken. Who've fought with those babies against diseases for minutes or years. Who've done every single thing they could think of to save them. Who've had to decide that it was time to let them go. Who've laid beside them when they left this earthly existence.

These children:

the ones who were here, then they weren't

the ones we never met

the ones we held for too short a time

the ones that only ever existed in our hearts

all of them make us who we are.

They all make us mothers, whether it seems like anyone else ever understands it or not.

Let us celebrate them, and us, in this moment. Let us reach out to one another and share our stories. Let us tell other women that we love them, that we appreciate them, that we honor them, that we value them, that we grieve with them.

A to Z Music Challenge - R is for Rihanna, R.E.M., Rage Against the Machine, R.E.O. Speedwagon, Ramones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rolling Stones, Diana Ross, Kenny Rogers, Run DMC, Republica, Radiohead, Corrine Bailey Rae, Rascal Flatts, Lionel Richie, Smokie Robinson and Rush

Are you ready for this one?  This is one of those posts I warned you guys about that will be long. But worth it. Off we go.

Rihanna
Oh, Rhirhi.  I want to sit this girl down and tell her that she's way too beautiful, too young, too talented to waste any more seconds on an asshole with a neck tattoo and anger issues.  (Incidentally, I HATE the fact that this particular asshole is also talented and that I find myself singing along happily to his songs until I catch myself then kick myself in the shins). Sure, she's got issues. Her last album mostly sucked. But this song right here, the one that she can sing the hell out of live, this. Just this. Good lord. This.

R.E.M.
One of my favorite bands of the 80s and 90s, they helped make alternative music what it is. Their music appealed to a wide audience, from rock to pop, and the lyrics in their songs spoke to the souls of their fans.

Rage Against the Machine
Angry fast genre crossing metal, I'll probably always associate them with my later teenage years. As a public service announcement, if you went to Lollapalooza and bought a shirt don't wear it around people in their early 20s because they will have no idea what it means.

R.E.O Speedwagon
Arena rock, power ballads. Dudes with guitars singing songs to make girls throw their panties on the stage. Get your lighters up. Or the app on your phone. Or whatever.

Ramones
Um yeah. I'm going to consider the fact that they are in my son's top 5 favorite bands as a good thing and leave it at that. Sometimes being sedated wouldn't be so bad.

Red Hot Chili Peppers
Drugged out, under the bridge, literally. Heroin is nasty shit, but it makes for damn good music.

Rolling Stones
One of the oldest, one of the best. Still kicking ass these days, even if they're insanely wrinkly and wearing sensible shoes.

Diana Ross
She did diva better than anyone else did. Oh, the hair and the smile. Music wouldn't be the same if it wasn't for her.

Kenny Rogers
We're just going to pretend that he never made it out of the 80's, that he never made chicken and that he doesn't know what plastic surgery is. mmmmkay?  My dad loved this whole album, so I do too.

Run DMC
Easily one of the most important groups in the history of hip hop, we aren't going to talk about how old it makes me since I saw them live back in the day. No, we aren't. This is the one I picked because I left Aerosmith out all the way back in the A's, and I've seen them live too and we still aren't talking about how old I am.

Republica
Say what?  I know. Many of you might not even know who they are, but a few of their songs will forever remind me of my summers in college, meeting new crazy friends and enjoying those last moments of pseudo-youth.

Radiohead
Thom Yorke is one of the most interesting people in music, for sure. They're almost as well known for his quirks as their music. Regardless, they are one of the most influential bands from the late 90s and 2000s. Yeah, Creep is the song that made them popular, but I like this one better....because I'm waiting for the karma police to arrest a few people.

Corrine Bailey Rae
She has such an old fashioned, smooth voice, it's almost like she should belong to a different generation. This is one of those songs that should be in the rotation for all my friends. Because I said so.

Rascal Flatts
One of the few country acts to make my list, I love them just because I do. I would actually go see them live voluntarily, and I'd even use it as an excuse to buy some boots.  (I already have the hat, shhhh). This song. Stab me in the heart. The main reason I can't listen to country music is that it's way too goddamn real. I can't even listen to it now.

Lionel Richie
Hello?  Is it me you're looking for?

Smokie Robinson
Him and Kenny. Good lord. Step away from the surgery center. Please. This man is an icon in music, even if I can't stand to look at him these days. Just sing Smokie. Stop messing up your face. Oh, and there will be no contaminating this song with Gwenyth. No. No, no, no.

Rush
This is me pandering to my husband. I don't love Rush, but he does. So here.

Fiction Friday Challenge - The Unraveling Begins

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

Your mother has Alzheimers. It's already fairly advanced. I'm sorry.

I sat across from the doctor in disbelief, even though I knew in too many ways that what he was saying was true. I'd suspected it for a while now, but never allowed myself to really entertain the possibility that she was changing.

I didn't want to lose her. I didn't want her to lose herself. I didn't want her memories to slowly slip away from her mind as they had been. I wanted to believe that it was something else, anything else. I wanted to scoop them up as they fell away from her and tuck them back safely inside her head where they belonged.

I wanted to. I tried.

I would sit and show her pictures, tell her the same stories she told me for years and years and years, recite them back from the memories that she placed in my mind of her memories. She would nod sometimes and ask questions that I didn't have the answers to, but I allowed myself to think that maybe there was some recognition in there. That maybe she was just tired or a little confused. That maybe it was the medication.

Then I got a phone call from the hospital. She'd gone out walking a few days ago as she had always done, except this time she didn't know how to get home. So she kept walking.

By the time someone stopped her and asked who she was and if she needed help, it was dark and she was on the other side of town. Knowing her usual routine, that meant that she had been out walking for at least eight hours. She'd walked for so long that she wore a hole in the sole of her shoe. She didn't have any identification on her except the medical ID bracelet. Thank god she had that, or I might not even know where she is now.

She was stable, just a bit dehydrated. They'd given her a few bags of IV fluid, run lots of tests.

She was mostly excited that the kitchen has prepared her sandwich just the way she liked. Though she should have been ravenously hungry, she'd taken her customary six bites and left the rest.

She wasn't sure why I was there, or why she was there. She called me by the wrong name at first. By that name. The one that stung and I didn't fully understand. I reminded her who I was, and she tilted her head a bit before asking if I was sure. Was I sure who I was? I thought so, even if she didn't know who I was all the time anymore. Even if she used that name.

Why did she have to use that name?

Why?

She wanted to know why they had stabbed her in the arm with this long needle thing, as she motioned the the IV. Her arm so thin and her skin so papery that you could actually see the catheter in the vein.

I nodded my head as the doctor told me all the things that needed to change going forward. She couldn't be alone. She needed supervision. I needed to think about applying for conservatorship. She wouldn't be able to manage her finances much longer. He asked if I knew how she was doing as far as all that went - whether she was current on her bills.

I am not sure.

I wasn't. I should have been. I should have pulled myself out of denial when it all started months earlier, back when she started to forget small details. I should have noticed the subtle signs. I should have realized that it wasn't the medication, that she wasn't tired, that it wasn't just confusion.

I should have known.

I failed her, and something terrible could have happened.

I pushed those thoughts away in an instant, refusing to let the guilt take over. She was here now, she was safe, I was here, and I could help her. I had to help her. I just knew how hard it was going to be.

I'd known this woman for my entire life, after all. She was the one who's voice I first heard, the one who sang me lullabies, the one who brushed my hair, the one who fed me.

Now, I would have to do all of that for her.

I glanced away from the doctor for a moment, and through the glass into her room. She sat on the edge of the bed, hands folded neatly in her lap, staring at the wall.

I knew that it wouldn't be easy. I knew that she would resist it all, that she would deny there was anything wrong. I knew that she was a strong and proud soul, and that she would fight me.

I had no idea the unraveling that would begin that day.

This post is a part of a collaborative project including many writers from different backgrounds, all writing on the same prompt each week. After taking a break from the challenge, I am back (and hope to stay a while). Please check out the pieces written by the others in the group. I will add their links as they post.

The prompt for this week was a simple one, in keeping with the idea that May is the month that we celebrate mothers.

Simply, it is this

Begin your piece with the following phrase, "Your mother..."

That Should Totally Be A T-Shirt

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 02 Mei 2013 0 komentar
I have this friend.

The kind of friend who knows everything about me. Yep, even that stuff.

AND SHE STILL LIKES ME.

I decided about three seconds after I got off the phone with her that I was writing about her today, immediately after I had my freak out moment then got my shit together.

Things are hard for her right now. Really fucking hard. Like the hardest that they ever get.

And I'm not there.

I should be.

I wish I was.

But I'm not.

We moved.  Far, far away.

Then life got complicated as it always does and the two of us went years without talking hardly at all.

Then one day she called or I called and we picked back up like nothing else had ever happened. Because that's what real friends can do.

It's pretty awesome.

This woman has seen every side of me, and me of her. When I say that, I mean literally. I was her doula and cried like a baby when her son was born. I've seen things, people.

She's a doula now because I brainwashed her. She's even in a nursing program to become a midwife. I like to think I get some credit for encouraging that nonsense.

We can talk about things like pelvic floor integrity and make jokes about incontinence because when you're a doula and your friend is a doula you can totally talk about shit like that. Then laugh. Then joke that it should be on a t-shirt. Then admit that you would actually wear that t-shirt. And that you'd wear them at the same time and take pictures together.

Even if everyone else thought you were the freaks you are.

I'm sending her a box tomorrow. A care package. It will be filled with as much candy as I can cram in there, because this woman loves candy like a fat kid loves cake.

(it's funny because I was a fat kid)

Seriously though, she has a never ending appetite for candy. She loves Peeps something fierce and eats Skittles in a specific order because that's just what you are supposed to do when you have candy consumption OCD.
This picture is driving her crazy right now
because she can't put them in rainbow order.
I'm sending her a box of crap because it's the closest I can get to actually being there with her right now.

Distance is a fucker.

I love you.

You got this.

Call me at 3am and I'll tell you jokes about grown ass women that pee their pants because they squeezed out giant melon heads. For serious. xoxo

A to Z Music Challenge - Q is for Queen, Quincy Jones, Queen Latifah, Queensryche, Queens of the Stone Age and Quiet Riot

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 01 Mei 2013 0 komentar
I needed a short letter today.

Thankfully, Q fits the bill quite nicely.

Queen
Of course they go first. I could (and have) written about them before. I love them so, so, so much and consider the fact that all my kids have their mp3 players loaded with Queen music as a sign that I'm doing something right as a parent.

Quincy Jones
One of the most influential producers in the last thirty years in music, he's also done a little recording. I always loved this song along with a few of his other collaborations. If only more people could pull this kind of talent together for songs.

Queen Latifah
I love, love, love this woman. She's strong and proud and beautiful. She's a rapper, a singer, an actress and a role model to women everywhere.

Queensryche
In the days when the hair bands were on the downslide, they showed up and proved that metal bands could write ridiculously good songs with deep, dark lyrics.  This song. I must have listened to it a bajillion times.

Queens of the Stone Age
One of the most interesting bands out there these days, they have pulled in all kinds of guests to work with them on songs. Heavy on guitar riffs, you might not recognize their name, but you've heard their music plenty if you ever wander the alternative radio stations. Oh, and who's the drummer in this video??? Yep, it's my boy Dave Grohl.

Quiet Riot
One of the earliest heavy metal bands, they rocked hard and set the stage for all kinds of music down the road. Turn it up. Go ahead. You know you want to.

Writer's Workshop Wednesday ~ Frenchy from The Crazy Mothereffers

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
Welcome to Writer's Workshop Wednesday!  This is my way of paying it forward to all the people out there who want to start writing, but don't have their own blogs yet, or who are established writers that are looking to appeal to a different audience.  I have also opened this up to those who would like to post anonymously about topics that are too difficult to write about publicly. Each week, I will host one or two posts by different writers.

I hope that you enjoy this series, I hope you find some new writers to follow, I hope this helps them out and I hope we can all learn something from them!

Up now, Frenchy from The Crazy Mothereffers. One of the best parts of writing so far has been connecting with my fans, then encouraging them to write - Frenchy was one of them!  She went from a fan, to a friend, to a fellow writer, and I'm pretty proud I helped her along the way!

She set up The Crazy Mothereffers with another writer (both choose to remain anonymous), and they share the funny things they find online on their Facebook page. They also write opposing opinions on controversial topics on the blog, which is awesome considering that both of them have strong opinions on just about everything and neither one of them holds back. This post is hi-lar-ious, just be warned that Frenchy enjoys the swears just as much as I do.

Frenchy's Follies...Crazy Kids! Out of the mouths of Babes...
As a mom, I can tell you that I have been absolutely stunned silent by some of the crazy and outlandish questions my two boys have asked me. I mean, where do they come up with this stuff? No worries! From now on you will never be put on the spot by those little rascals again!

"Mommy, why don't you stand up to pee like I do?"

This one *may* call for a live, peeing-standing-up demo, momma. Trust me, no matter what their age, they will instantly understand why we sit down to pee.

"Who is God? Why can't we see him? Where does God live? What is heaven?"

Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. Go directly to the nearest church, drop off the brats and pick them back up in a few days. Viola! Problem solved!

"Why does my pee pee get big sometimes?"

Ummmmm, parents beware! There is no good answer to this question. Just make up some crazy ass reason so they won't want to touch it again until puberty.

"Do you have to pay to go to work?"

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!?!?! Next question....

"Why is there hair growing on your privates?"

Duh! So it makes them harder to find. Kinda like an adult version of hide and seek, kiddo.

(Usually yelled loudly in public) "Why is that person so oldfatshortugly?"

DO NOT ANSWER THIS QUESTION! Just slowly walk away and whisper to the person "Whose kid is that anyway? He's a rude little bastard isn't he?"

"Why are you my mom?"

Because I pushed your 10 pound chunky little crying ass out of my teeny tiny vagina, that's why!

"Why don't girls have a pee pee?"

Your instinct tells you to make up some kind of scary shit... go with it! Tell them you had one and you cut it off and fed it to the dog. The look on their little face... PRICELESS!

"Why do we always pee when we poop, but we don't poop every time we pee?"

Go ahead and pre-print  the diagram of the sphincter muscle that I have provided. This question comes from left field and will totally catch you off guard. Afterwards, be prepared for a nasty-gram from the teacher who is wondering why the hell you taught your child the word "sphincter". It's such a fun little word for a first grader to say, isn't it?

When in church, during the offering, as you are putting your money into the basket.... "Why do we have to pay to see God?"

Good fucking question kid!

Whether you think I'm an idiot or a total genius for providing you with these very useful answers to you child's burning questions, I'm a total fucking genius. Hopefully you have realized that I'm joking and that I would never say these things to a kid. Under the age of 2, at least. I was going to write about something serious, but there are too many bad things going on in this world and it's depressing all of us. It was time for a break from all of that.

You're welcome.

Writer's Workshop Wednesday ~ Mia from "We're all a little mad here"

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
Welcome to Writer's Workshop Wednesday!  This is my way of paying it forward to all the people out there who want to start writing, but don't have their own blogs yet, or who are established writers that are looking to appeal to a different audience.  I have also opened this up to those who would like to post anonymously about topics that are too difficult to write about publicly. Each week, I will host one or two posts by different writers.

I hope that you enjoy this series, I hope you find some new writers to follow, I hope this helps them out and I hope we can all learn something from them!

Up first, a submission from Mia, also known as Mad Madam Mom, the brains behind We're All a Little Mad Here. She was excited to take part in this series, as she runs a Facebook page, but hasn't branched out into blogging yet. Without further adieu, Mia~

Stop mocking me blank piece of paper!

Or rather blank Wordpad document!

I'm trying!

I'm racking my brain to come up with an idea of a blog post, I really am, but all I can think about it how it's nap time. And how much I lurve nap time. I'm not strict about much with my two minions but nap time, bed time and kindness are at the top of the list. I love the peace and quiet after the kid's doors are closed. The sweet sound of *..CRASH.. pause...no screaming. Ok we're good.* relative silence.

Lil Miss is five and "too old" for naps. Girl! I'm 31 and I will never be too old for a nap. I take one sometimes too, that's why it's called nap time! Duh. But she is not too old for "quiet time". It's all the same to me, Sweetheart, as long as you're in your room with the door closed playing or reading quietly, that's awesome.

Now hush, Mommy's writing here.

Where was I? Ah yes, being mocked by a blankity blank blank piece of paper.

I really like to write but I can't really plan it out ahead of time. I have to wait for my brain to say, "HEY! This is funny! Write it down!" That's why I love the book of face so much. I can just pop onto my phone or computer and throw out a funny status about how Sir, who is about to be three in July (be still my heart), has found the utter joy in antagonizing his sister. (And now, by some kind of sorcery and skullduggery, I'll turn it into a blog post!) I'll admit, I think his antics are pretty funny sometimes, and she gives as good as she gets. But I'm sick to death of saying, "Be nice!" "No hitting!" "Why did you try to ride the dog!??" on repeat. I'm sure it's only just begun, these crazies of mine are just that, crazy.

It's a good thing the Husby and I have been touched by the crazy wand ourselves. We've been able to laugh through most of it and hand out liberal time outs when the laughing stops. Even the adults get time outs around here.. I gave myself one just the other day. It's still called a time out when I'm hiding in the bathroom playing Candy Crush on my phone, right?

More often than not, though, I'm just staring at their little faces in such awe that the Universe decided that these two are the two souls we've been blessed with to help guide them through this life. Their conceptions were kismet so I shouldn't be surprised. I think they were just waiting around for us to figure out it was about time.

I wondered all my life what my purpose was, my mom said my conception was pretty earth-shattering in that she was using ample protection at the time. So I must be here for a reason, right? Well, the day Lil Miss arrived, I figured it out.

It's my job, with the help of the most amazing Daddy ever, to rear these minions, not for the child labor as I once thought, but as high functioning human beings who have love for all other human beings. Sounds pretty simple.. as long as I could get through the crazy baby stages. I am so much better at the 2+ stage, they can talk then. Granted, I've only progressed to the 5+ stage so we'll see what the dreaded Teen Years are like. I'll probably wish I never taught them the joy of sarcasm and wit and the well-timed eye roll. But for now, we're a happy bunch.

I'm finding more about myself that isn't completely centered around these dang kids and I like what I'm finding. I have big plans and I am slowly uncovering the path to the vision I see as our future. I've learned that it doesn't matter what happened yesterday, only that I remember what I have learned from each and every experience. I have learned to be present in the present, to pay attention to what's happening right now because it won't happen again.

Sir won't say, "You sit wif me?" for much longer and pretty soon, Lil Miss will be reading all the bedtime books herself.

I am so excited for what our future holds but I'm not wishing away the present to get there.

Well, looky there. It looks like I done wrote a blog post. Funny how once I start typing it all just shows up the screen there. Huh.
